Has "Circus Money Dub" ever been posted here? I'd figured it'd be a 4th track in the EP. It was originally released on the Euro "Somebody's Saturday Night EP"...
Yes, great article @Moderator: D-Mod ! I’m so happy Larry convinced him to play bass because I love his bass playing. And my favorite line: “Imagine two people that built a house being asked who laid what brick.” Perfect!
For Process Freaks
Was coding a few new pages (!) when I had reason to revisit this great interview/article at Sound on Sound: It discusses the reggae etiology of CM in detail, as well as writing and recording process notes from Becker and Klein. Worth a look for dem dat are interested in this sort of thing.
13 years. Seems both like forever ago, and just yesterday.
Arrived late to this party in only recently discovering the site after re-listening to ELEVEN/CIRCUS on a loop for many days and decided to see what else was possibly out there - truly amazed to discover it's existence and all the musical riches contained within- THANK YOU first and foremost. Sounds like I missed DARK HORSE DUB being up here, in case it was being considered for a re-post.
I have been looking for this 'release' since seeing this and come up with nothing so any information on it would be appreciated-
Apologies if this is a re-post / old query and THANK YOU to all concerned for keeping the wondrous musical flame that is WB alive. Take care & stay safe.
I've been spending a lot of time with "Circus Money" lately ("Get back with your dimestore nihilism!") and thinking--as a fan of immersive mixes, everything from quad to 5.1 to Atmos--how great it could sound in surround. Elliot Scheiner's 5.1 mixes of Gaucho, 2VN, and Everything Must Go (and DF's Nightfly trilogy) really open up those already brilliant albums and let you hear things in the performances that you've never heard before. So . . .
@Moderator: D-Mod: would you consider asking Elliot to have a go at "Circus Money" or--failing that--making the stems available for sale on Bandcamp (as Fleet Foxes did with their latest album), so that talented amateurs could give it a shot? Thanks for keeping Walter's music alive, and for being so generous with what he left behind.
Will the Circus Money or 11 tracks of Whack CD's be available to purchase again?
Hey David - they appear in this thread individually, then Matt made an EP of them. Glad you found...
I apologize Mod I jut figured out why I couldn't find the tracks before, I didn't know they were all bundled in one package and I saw it listed as the one track, Circus Money the Hammerhead Mix. Clicked download the album and found it.
David - not sure I'm getting your complaint. Every Demo and bonus cut requested is on this page --including DHD and the Bob demo. Plus, our download page has a 3-cut EP of all the Circus Money bonus tracks in one download. They're all still there -- nothing's been forced down. Or am I missing your meaning? If so, please try again...
Aww man... were these tracks forced down? was looking for a better verserion of DHD and interested in the demo version of bob is not your uncle anymore
so happens it's just a grab from the interwebs.
That house on Bob Demo vid, can you say if that is a WB house? Ocean running right up to the door, other visuals make me think it is but, could just be a house.
Glad you all enjoy.
download here a 3-cut EP of the CM bonus tracks
Thanks for DHD, what a treat to hear it unclipped after all these years, & with an expanded lyric sheet to boot. Would have logged in to express thanks sooner, but was in the western Yukon, metered satellite internet, spotty and/or nonexistent cell service, & etc. Back in civilization now; thanks again! Also took a few moments to reread Bob's lyric sheet. Several online reviews read it as a pendant to Everyone's Gone to the Movies, Cousin Dupree, etc. -- Creepy Older Relative -- but to me it feels much more like the ghost of someone who's passed returning to the old house, drawn back but unable to connect with anyone save the dopey dog.
Such great stuff. Thank you so much!
That would be a very pleasant coma to fall into!
just to make sure to have a friend check you in an hour, to make sure you haven't fallen into a dub coma :-)
Thank you!

BOB IS NOT YOUR UNCLE ANYMORE (Demo)
B-side to Euro single
(W. Becker, L. Klein -2007)
This old house looks just the way it was
Just a tumbledown of pine and river stone
But it’s only just a shadow
of the place you knew before
Because Bob’s just not your uncle anymore
Winter’s here
And the day don’t last too long
Barely thimbles full of sunshine to go on
There’s an ocean full of midnight
rolling right up to the door I guess
Bob’s just not your uncle anymore
And I say it without pride and without shame
That the dopey Irish Setter dog — Regan’s still his name
Well he looks right glad to see you
But he might not want to be you
Even though he loves you madly
from before
Before Bob was not your uncle anymore
Good old games
Like they play them back in town
Where the wayward daughter’s luck
runs strong and pure
You might feel like you’re a winner
but you never know for sure
Now that Bob’s just not your uncle anymore
And so we see
You can find your way back home
And that maybe when you get there
There’s a lock on every door
Now you know for certain
What the big wide world is good for
And that Bob’s just not your uncle anymore

Walter Becker 2007
[NOTE: NEW FINAL VERSE AFTER FADE]
they bang the hammer and they pitch the tents
throw up some posters for the residents
your daddies' footfalls on the rain slick streets
you try to keep up with your tiny feets
take it easy baby
nice and slow
little Walter got a
ways to go
I lacks a nickel momma
don’t you know
circus money for the early show
the tiger's sleeping and he can't wake up
you pitch some pennies in a paper cup
they guess your age they guess yr weight
you toss the softballs at the china plates
hold'er steady baby
there you go
let me hit you honey
sweet and lo
thus the tab is written
blow by blow
circus money for the evening show
all the horses baby all the men
round the circle and around again
you watch some hobo take a nasty spill
laugh like a bastard oh you know you will
you got to have it when you first walk up
drop a dollar in the old tin cup
you're gonna need it
when it's time to go
circus money for the late late show
The denim sneakers and the leather vest
the grim fruition of the life long quest
the dancing monkey cum the human wife
the mighty ruin of a middling life
dogs and ponies in a
tidy row
a little trickle or a
mighty flow
won't you tell me darlin
what I owe
circus money for the midnight show

Dark Horse Dub
(Bonus Track - European Release)
Walter Becker and Larry Klein (2007)
Chalk Miller was a man
He was a man he was a man he was a man
He played the favorites and he did okay
He didn't fool with any longshot play
Chalk Miller didn't mind
He didn't mind he didn't mind he didn't mind
He liked to bet a couple bucks on a nag
Drink his winnings from a bottle in a bag
Dark horse
Coming up on the outside
Dark horse
At a hundred to one
Dark horse
Nuthin short of a miracle
Run like a bastard
Dark horse run
Chalk Miller came home
He came home he came home he came home
Chalk Miller was alone
he was alone he was alone he was alone
He knew the minute that he walked though the door
His one and only didn't live there any more
Jimmy Fish was a man
Another man another man another man
He likes to take a little action now and then
He likes to share his wise counsel with a friend
Dark horse
Coming up on the outside
Dark horse
At a hundred to one
Dark horse
Nuthin short of a miracle
Run like a bastard
Dark horse run
Chalk miller throws down
He throws down he throws down he throws down
What the hell it will all be over soon
I guess I might as well shoot for the moon
Gimme something that's a hundred to one
A little pony with a reason to run
Gimme something that could come home big
Gimme something gimme something ...
Dark horse
Coming up on the outside
Dark horse
At a hundred to one
Dark horse
Nuthin short of a miracle
Run like a bastard
Dark horse run
The kitchen table is a mess
A couple minutes til post-time is his guess
A cup of coffee and a half eaten roll
A couple saw-tail guppies in a bowl
A travel book called "Bangkok and beyond"
A smith and wesson that he pilfered from a blonde
He lights a camel and he makes a little cough
A sip of bourbon god help us and they're off…

Tony and cjb...-- the bonus track for the euro version was "Dark Horse Dub", and we can definitely sling that up here before too long. Tracking down that Bob Demo may take a tad longer...but it should go up here too so we will get it. Cjbrayshaw, DHD wasn't cut from the N.A.. version., but was made specifically for a euro bonus.
Then there was the free New Years' download for Newsletter subscribers; "Hammerhead Remix", another dub fantasia. Yeah, those tracks should be posted -- thanks for reminding me of them
"Dark Horse Dub" is a beautiful, atmospheric track which I only know from someone kindly posting 4 of its 6 minutes over at Great Big Public Music Sharing Site. I'm curious to know why it was cut from the finished North American album - legendary Aesthetic Perfectionism, or maybe some more prosaic technical limitation (running time, sample copyright & etc.)? I suppose I am also subliminally hoping that the gorgeous finished object might appear here one day like a starfish on the beach, revealed by an ebbing tide. FWIW Circus Money is my favorite of the post-reunion records, SD & solo, one that has provided so much listening pleasure over the years. In every show I attended post-2008 (& there were a lot of those...) I kept hoping one of its tracks would receive the full-band + WB vox treatment, but no dice. But the album has its own warm autonomy & maybe that, in the end, is enough.
Hi there Moderator. I recall that there was a demo version of Bob Is Not Your Uncle Anymore, but only available as a download to overseas folks. Can we now make that available to us friendly USA fans? Here? That would be swell, thanks!
