Were you close today. Hmm… How to dive in here... I guess I'd have to begin with a nostalgic reference to the "Slang of Angels"; it's one I like to use to get meaningful conversations off the ground and draw the dearly departed ancestral spirits near. I suppose I would have to start there. Walter had a lens. To define my terms - for Walter - it was as if somehow, the elaboration of his own personal style was like the framing of an equation couched in some curious sort of "golden mean" that Walter could divine. Something that had a rhythm, something that appeared manifestly in the ups and downs of the human condition itself, and something which was perennial - that hearkened to some ancient, archaic cannon that his eagle eye could discern lurking just beneath the surfaces. And that his oblique wit was most definitely bequeathed to him by his intimacy with the muse. A student of the mystery, and of subjects both compelling and opaque to mortal eyes - in his framing of the world and of the human experience - he was a master of allegory. He got it. His ears were wide open to the quiet sound of the siren’s voice, and he was accustomed to seeing in the dark. But like the bodhisattva, in life - he took us to the threshold - but advanced not through the door. Until now. And for that, my friend - I remain eternally grateful. Like the mystery herself in her elusive game of peek-a-boo with us famished mortals – remaining always just beyond our reach as she entertains and beguiles the senses with that enticing dance of the seven veils – she is just behind door #2. Where you know that she is waiting. Like a firm appointment with the late, late show. So godspeed. How Walter deployed language was like science: The Slang of Angels. As if the deftness of the turning of a phrase could hold the world in germ. He was always pointing to that something lying just before our eyes, yet somehow out of sight. Becker strove to find that crack in world – make for us the omelet, and then present it up for brunch: and through his web of words, reveal to us their Zero Crossing… As he once so aptly put it. So were ya close today…?
