- Love In The 4th DemoIn Rarities & UnreleasedJanuary 14, 2020His vocals are matchless on this. I'm glad you (Matt) could make this Vox work with the Signet track (folks, that was a hell of a job he had to do, and it's absolutely seamless). But those vocals....man...and the phrasing, like someone noted on the other post. There are so many reasons this is a great song (and a great demo IMHO). This was probably my favorite of the demos floating around back in the day. The song's simply peerless, a real showcase for what he does best in so many ways. It's nice to have a cleaner version to listen to - thanks .62
- Love in the 4th (aka Lies I Can Believe)In Rarities & UnreleasedJanuary 13, 2020I just listened to the new higher quality version of Love in the 4th on repeat while prepping for dinner tonight (now I have a bowl of fresh guacamole sitting on the counter, I chuckled to myself when I was putting the finishing touches on it right as Walter sang "It's getting older - But it ain't getting better.") A definite improvement in quality, though it's still got the distortion from being a bit too loud. God what a good song this is. In a way I'm disappointed I didn't appreciate the demo version before, but in another way I'm loving getting to hear this with almost completely fresh ears. My personal highlights: "The train is rolling out of the station / Across the platform another train is pulling in" is such a clever phrase anyway, but that phrasing when Walter sings it, with the change in tone of voice and hesitation before "pulling in..." Perfect. The bridge section with Bob Sheppard's sax solo really steals the spotlight. The chord changes mixed with the incredibly melodic sax lines really paint a picture.47
- Remembering Walter BeckerIn Everything Else·May 25, 2018In one of those rare, out-of-context moments that could only take place in New York City, I met Walter Becker last year as I was struggling to get past the death of my beloved Mother. You've all had those out-of-context moments, where you meet someone and they look familiar, but you just can't quite place them... Those of you writing on this forum write about Walter Becker the famous musician. Forgive me, but I just want to write a few words in tribute to the OTHER Walter, the smart and funny gentleman who helped me many times, even though we were total strangers. It's a side his fans probably never saw. I still miss him. I visited the Hawaiian Lantern Floating Ceremony website recently, and submitted my Mother's name for a lantern to be floated this Memorial Day in Honolulu. On a whim, I submitted Walter's name also. The ceremony will be broadcast live at: lanternfloatinghawaii.com. Have a look. Perhaps you will see Walter's name float past. Even if you don't, please remember him kindly. To view a very touching 5 minute video from the 2016 ceremony, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tfLL16XrLc. Extending Sincere Sympathies to WB family and friends.47416

- My cover version of Downtown CanonIn Everything Else·February 22, 2020Recently I posted the chords for Downtown Canon, and decided to record a cover of it, featuring me on Rhodes, bass, and vocals. Of course it's not as good as Walter's original (I mean, what is??), but I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed playing it. What a strikingly beautiful and haunting song! (I wanted to post this Thursday on Walter's birthday, but didn't have time to finish it up until now. Happy belated birthday!)54127

- Just How Tacky? In Everything ElseMarch 20, 2024D-Mod, Meeting the off-stage Walter Becker in 2016 was a great honor for me. Receiving the lovely rust-colored silk shirt with tiny, embroidered pineapples on it was beyond wonderful! I will treasure it always as a reminder of the gentleman who helped me when I was struggling in Sandi's office! Walter should be remembered not only for his musical talent, but also for his kindness. D-Mod, we've never met, but I will remember your kindness as well. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for sharing these treasures with us all. One of your posts mentioned not reimbursing the postage, but I will pay it forward with a contribution to the American Cancer Society in Walter's name. Thank you yet again. What a lovely thing to do! 🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍61
- Just How Tacky? In Everything ElseMarch 15, 2024Dear D, I had such a good laugh over the “could be Italian” socks, I just about split laughing. Thank you 😂 I haven’t been active here in Walter Becker media forum because it seems like a place for actual musicians who know just how amazing Walt really was while I’m just a nut fan - though we’re all nut fans. I’m Dandom Slut from the yellow book days if anyone else is here too :) Thank you too for the black shirt - not his style I can see that but a lovely gift from his guitar tech ! Thank you for writing that out ! I couldn’t get the techs last name (your handwriting is horrendous, D !) but I’m enamored of the story because a guitar tech and your basic guitar god would have a special relationship, and I can see that in the shirt it was one of mutual respect, even if the shirt was picked up at a souvenir shop (it probably wasnt ?) - it’s a very classy shirt and of nice fabric, serious in nature, also elegant, but still comfy and smooth. Undoubtedly this is how we all see Walter and how I’ll always remember that silly dood. I never got to meet him but I swear, those socks are in good shape but very, very worn in the area only at the ankles where they chafed - D-MOD — YOU APPEAR TO HAVE INADVERTENTLY SENT ME HIS “LUCKY SOCKS” I am completely honored by these unreal gifts- it’s a moment to not only hug him hard while looking for his dna, oh I know we’re icky lol, but to see my hero as human and at the same time absolutely real. I can’t begin to explain how precious this is for me. xx sorry this was long, my initial thought was to mail this thank you on a paper plate (how tacky!) via usps, which I still might do. Many hugs and my happy memories of Walt and my life with his music, all in your direction too. Finn :)61

- Editrix listens to WB MediaIn Everything Else·December 30, 2021"Wendy Eisenberg: If I’m totally honest about what I actually listened to this year, it’s the demos for this Walter Becker record from 1994 called 11 Tracks of Wack. The demos feel like how Suicide feels, but if Suicide was funny. Literally 90 percent of the time, I’m listening to that album."6154
- Josie, Carlton, and the “Letterman Guitar”In Street-Legal·July 24, 2019Had reason today to revisit Larry Carlton’s sweet tribute to Walter, a nice Josie, in Nov ’17 (below). Larry had played w/ SD that year of course, including the two stadium gigs Walter missed (he almost made both! Story on that some other time perhaps….), but he did also play with SD at Walter’s last gig in Greenwich Ct (May 27, 2017). It’s a nice intro and performance from Larry, seemingly full of joy and good memories. (and lots of props for Herington!). …which of course put me in mind of Walter’s live Josie on Letterman in ’95…worth mentioning/showing now perhaps because I’m pretty sure (I think I’m sure) that particular Sadowsky is gonna be in the auction. Walter always played well, I thought, during high-pressure performances — the 2 Lettermans, HOF, etc. That’s my boy! By the by, can't help but mention that a Rolling Stone’s article on “that last gig” in CT typically gets a major fact wrong, in this case, speaking of the missed stadia gigs, that “Becker had missed shows before and most fans didn’t make much of his absence…”. Missed shows? Really?? Grrrrr. Before the 2 stadiums he missed months before he died, Walter had to leave the stage halfway through 1 show, ONE show, during all of SD Mach II’s touring years, because of a 104’ fever. Be advised that both of those guys, Becker and Fagen both, were, in a word, incredible fucking troupers. Ok that’s a few words. But seriously…lesser artists would have cancelled or missed many times the number of shows these guys played sick or after burying a loved one or whatever. Really amazing pros.61300
