Luciana Souza - Love Is For Strangers

By Walter Becker & Larry Klein

Now and then a person needs to hear a pretty story

Even when her heart’s been broken for good

You know the kind I mean

    Something sad and sweet

A fairy tale of longing and belonging

One that goes down like bourbon

Once upon a moonless night a hungry heart is waiting

There among the shadows someone appears

    However did you know

    To be pale and dark

Strange and quiet angel of the evening

How’d you know I’d be waiting

    On some distant star

Nobody cares much who we are

    Love is for strangers

    Love is for strangers

Yes its true, I know my dear

You must have come from somewhere

You grew up in a house then went on your way

You traveled far in a broken line

Lived lives and loves too numerous for telling

Here you are I believe you

    All your words are lies

Truth is the fire in your eyes

    Love is for strangers

    Love is for strangers

This is all for you my dear

I give it to you gladly

Yours to have for now, for many a while

Let us not pretend we know what we know

And if we can’t say why or where we’re going

    All the same

    We are leaving

When all is said and done

Even the true of heart will run

    Love is for strangers

    Love is for strangers

Now and then a woman wants to tell a pretty story

Even if she’s sure how the story ends

The zero comments hanging here are killing me.

I'm sort of heartbroken -- well, maybe not quite heart-broken, just a little cracked, maybe -- that no one has any comment to share. Yeah, his songs for Maddie P are pretty standard WB (although the tapes recording their writing sessions are damn interesting)!.

But this "Love is for Strangers" in particular is, imho, an f***in' KILLER.

One thing I hope some of our posts will do -- in the fullness of time -- is exhibit the range of musical sensibilities WB had as part of his lexicon. He often chose to release what he released 'cause that's what he wanted to show the world, for a variety of reasons (see his Whack EPK: "what matters is the SONG") ...and for those of us inclined towards musical deconstruction (not for everyone!), comparing his *very* earliest and later (or even "demo" versions) is illustrative of that in some fascinating ways.

No much of that to do here; we just don't have enough of a comparative library built up yet. NB: Once we do, though, we expect to see no less that half-a-dozen dissertations on WB's music [*] Now that would be an interesting contest: names for those dissertations. Evocative of Steely Dan 1.0 's very fine Contest #4] But in he meantime, surely somebody else is struck and...gulp..maybe even a little moved by its beautiful, painful existential beauty .

Can I get an Amen? OK...a little shy, tiny white-boy one at least?

PS Luciana is Larry Klein's better half.

I became aware of this from Larry Klein’s page. My opinion side, I have a circle of Brazilian friends who are in varying stages of immigrating from São Paulo. They love this album including this track. Like Steely Dan and Walter, bosa nova has an understated sheen with a lot of depth if you look below that. Great stuff!

Just listened..... Agree - lovely track, great feel.

The version of 'Were you blind that day' on the album is a winner also.

Love Walters production work in the 90's too (on Windham Hill and Triloka especially), partial to those China Crisis albums also. Was he involved in producing any other projects that never saw a release?

funny u should ask---we're steeling ourselves for the next big spreadsheet project; production credits with all types of endings. Should be done by November. Of 2019.

He produced an awful lot of jazz artists i nthe 80s, some never made to market.

Sounds like a job and a half!!

Hats off to you all for all the work going in to this project. Maybe once you've uncovered everything, is it possible we'll perhaps see some sort of commercial box set re-issue of Walter's albums along with extra discs which include all this lovely stuff you're putting up across the site - live, written for others, unreleased, demos, produced for others, and a tasty accompanying book of photos, writings, lyric sheets etc.....(Too much to ask??) - I'd buy it in a moment!

Hi Moderator - I would love to hear this but cannot. This is the message I get in the UK when I try to play it. "The uploader has not made this video available in your country". Please can you check the settings. Thanks.

Looks like you sent a us3.proxysite link earlier. I had the email notification (which shows the start of the address only) but the message is not on this web page (anymore?). Happy to try that too if you want.

    It's "Martin" by the way.

Tried it on a different Mac (with far less running than my work one) and it plays glitch free. So, yes, that link is a simple workaround for us foreigners.

It's a lovely song. I will have to check out some more of her stuff. It the sort of thing I like to listen to driving home from a studio at 4 in the morning.

Re: the comments above on WB's jazz productions in the '90s, I remember there was some talk about him producing a Marty Krystall album for Windham Hill Jazz, but only one track got released, on a compilation called Commotion. I actually wrote to Marty at that time and asked if the full album was available, and he said, "That album has not been, and will not be, released." Too bad, wonder what went wrong?

Isn't available in my country either, the Netherlands. But it is available on Spotify. https://open.spotify.com/track/0yyiPVdXKqU31cn6IUN4q7?si=7zF6e2tUQCSGjJpaa0qU4w

Great track. Gotta love them bossa's. When the rest of the world invented popmusic and forgot about that jazz part in music, Brasil - João Gilberto - got reall smart by inventing Bossa Nova.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. The concept and execution of the album is ambitious and, I think, ultimately successful; to convey the essence of bossa nova with contemporary songs.
