- Favorite Walter track ?In Everything Else·August 1, 2021Mine has to be "three picture deal". The piano intro is beautiful and that catchy rhythm reminds you kind of a Josie kind of thing. Walter's voice sounds fantastic and Chris Potter's sax solo in the beginning, it's truly amazing. I remember I ordered this when I was on my second tour of Iraq in 2008 and I was so excited to receive Circus Money in the mail when it arrived in Baghdad, I brought an amplifier to my motor pool and played the shit out of that album every single day for the last two months of my deployment. I always listened to Three picture deal in my headphones before I went to bed, and listening to this lyrics that were haunting yet beautiful... I remember when Walter passed my ex-wife was in Germany at the time let me know that he passed before I even knew.... I still to this day when I listen to this album remember those times in Iraq and how I made it through that time with his, Donald's and Steely Dan's music. The combination of the three made it so much easier to make it through each day. Well I wish I had the opportunity to tell Walter that to his face, but I'm grateful I got to see him that one time in Canada, I got to talk to Walt Weiskopf, that amazing saxophone player, and I always asked how Don and Walter were doing and how it is working with such brilliant minds.... Well I know I'm kind of rambling now but, the circus money album, was the soundtrack to a difficult time in my life but it made it so much easier. Rip Walter... Thank you for making the wonderful music that you did. Well aside from the rambling what is your favorite Walter song...?410112
- Love in the 4th (aka Lies I Can Believe)In Rarities & UnreleasedJanuary 10, 2020Wow, D-Mod, this is fantastic! One of my favorite ways to appreciate WB music is to hear the evolution of a song from demo to full band, and now I can do that with the song formerly referred to as Lies I Can Believe, which was always one of my personal faves from the demos. The full-band version is just awesome. And it’s so interesting to know that there were these alternate sessions with a different band than the Lost Tribe guys. I want to hear more of these sessions! I’m sure there are more great ones in there. Here‘s a question: if nothing from that studio appears on 11ToW, why do they even need to credit that studio? Similar to when a musician plays a session but their work is not used on the album, that person doesn’t need to be credited, right? Anyway, looking forward to more listens of this amazing track. Thanks D-Mod, you made my day!!64
- The Dopest CutIn Rarities & UnreleasedMay 20, 2020My initial thoughts on this track: I think this is great! I mean, this track kind of proves to me that WB made the right decision. DITB is one of my top 5 WB tracks, and I think this lacks the "edge" of the album version. Not in a bad way, but in a confirmational way. He could have done a more Steely sound, but it wouldn't have been as propulsive, as lean, as impactful, as what he DID do. I mean, to me this version sounds slower, even though it is a percent or two faster in tempo than the album version. There's a story of how during one rehearsal for the 93 tour, Erskine increased the tempo to some song by one - ONE - beat per minute, and at the end Walter commented that it felt like the band was rushing. So he for sure knew that he had slowed the tempo down here while still making the song feel like it moved more. For reference, this is both tracks, with vocals starting the same time. So after the album intro, when the vocals come in, signet is panned left and album is panned right: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ju0gkgbce3wjhp8/down%20in%20the%20bottom%20mix%20l%20r.mp3?dl=0 And because it would drive me crazy otherwise, here it is tempo matched. Turns out the difference is actually half a beat per second. I mean damn. I could tell the difference immediately, but damn. Half a beat per second is so small, but it really matters here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/8r72rgu1lyuhwbh/down%20in%20the%20bottom%20lr%20tempo%20match.mp3?dl=0 Matt64

- A matter of perspectiveIn Everything Else·September 25, 2023I was thinking today about the lyric fragment "looking down on the upside, locked out in the danger zone" that appears first in the Jack of Speed, as sung by WB on the 96 tour: The second part of this fragment, "Locked out in the danger zone," harkens back to this unreleased WB demo we shared in March of 2019. The first part of this lyrical fragment, "looking down on the upside" is repurposed and fleshed out on the track "Upside Looking Down" on Circus Money. D-Mod has talked before about Walter's contextual thesaurus, and the way he filed and refined and reinterpreted his own words over time, but I think this is a good example of how it goes forward and backward, continually reinterpreted until it ends up where it needs to be.6443

- Girlfriend x3In Rarities & UnreleasedFebruary 20, 2025Special day, never forgotten. God Bless him! Brings me back to an incredible period of life, hearing back the live takes. Thank you! My notes tell me that Take 19 was the keeper (possibly your No. 1 selection)? Now I don't remember everything, but for awhile, we truly believed that the live take was the master! There were decision upgrades made often. Tempo was a big factor, and although it feels right the live version is a smidgen faster than the master. Yes, months on the sequences, with the shifting of snares and kicks, it was hard to get used to anything else. We had tried pretty much everything with a live band. He knew what he wanted and looked around first. A little more Whackipedia for you here, if you'd like: Girlfriend was the first Whack song recorded on the March 5th (my birthday) Hyperbolic Sound tracking sessions (Reel 1A). We did 4 complete takes (CT) of Girlfriend, 2 of Book of Liars and 2 of Our Lawn that day, (no keepers). Lots of rundowns and False Starts (FT), we recorded everything, and there were some long jams between songs, let me tell you even reggae! Rough mixes were made daily, sometimes with instruments muted. Girlfriend Take 19 was recorded March 12th and was marked as "Master". These sessions went to March 25, 1993, and then the sorting, transfering (pieces from a few of the early 3M demos) to the Sonys, printing new sequences, vocals, overdubbing and mixing began. Thank you for the mentions D and M! Happy Birthday Walter, aloha!!71
